Anorexia: check out this animation video from Rafa, a brasilian artist, friend of mine : Ana Mia

Check out this animation from an artist friend of mine in Brazil, Curitiba, Rafael Wensersky. It was his graduation project and definitely wears his signature! He is the one who also made the drawing I displayed before.

leaving Porto Alegre

Another sad goodbye.

Some of my students receing their diplomas...

After almost three months, I had to kiss my students and the other volunteers goodbye. As always, last days are the most intense ones, all the things you still wanted to do before leaving, you try to pack into those last days, and all the people hearing that you leave are going: "wait, we have to go out, do something before you leave!". And Brasilians seem to have this heartbreaking habit of expressing their sadness with you leaving by insisting:"But why don't you stay??". As if it was my choice not wanting to be with them anymore. As if I am the responsable one for abandonning them. Usually they understand my answer of "Well, I was only volunteering, and a guy has to live as well on something...".

Me and some of the girls... God, you got the wrong gender!!

Bad news though was that my computer with all of my pictures and the final short movie that we made broke down, and no data could be retrieved... AAAAAAAAArrrrrrrgggghhh

The ride back from the final barbecue (Churrasco), with too many people so sitting in the trunk...

But hey, we'll always have the memories (at least until I go senile... or develop Alzheimer.

How things are in Porto Alegre, the happy harbour

Things are going well here in Porto Alegre.

So, for those who haven't been up to date, am working for two months as a volunteer, teaching a class of Visual Expression here, including taking pictures and filming.

My classes are after a month already halfway through now, and we are finishing the part of taking and manipulating digital pictures. It has been great to see them snapping away and slowly developping an "eye" for it. Even on their blog, www.expvis.blogspot.com, one can see the evolution. So, we have been studying various subjects:

- a anti Bush protest march beginning of March here in Porto Alegre during the visit of the American President, of which the pictures then were published on Indymedia, an independent press agency, in Belgium as in Brasil

- portraits of students and their family, trying to capture a bit of the personnality rather than just having them look beautiful - and, well, of the teacher as well ;-)

- Sports: asked some of my collegues students from my capoeira class to pose in a park, showing some of the moves.

- Nature: three agronomes showed us the diversity in the 50m2 behind our library, as well as the center where they are trying to support agriculture and environment- we also filmed so hope this will soon be a little documentary and put it on youtube...

- Atmosphere: going to the most organised and "parkly" cemetary, Jardim da Paz

Anyway, and loads of other things. I most say my students are very eager to learn and experiment. We had three days of selection, with various types of candidates. We were looking for adolescents (15 to 22 y/o). Choosing was tough, as they all had different situations (do you take somebody with less of a feel for it but in a really desperate situation?), but I do feel we choose well. The group is great anyway, and we get to chat about all types of subjects. I just love it as well having to learn something so that I can teach it, best way. Yesterday I was exploring the editing program Pinnacle and making s short documentary of the plants in this particular region, and it is fun to do! Anyway, gotta run, and start my class again. This wasn't much, but at least you get an idea of what me and my students are up to! If you want to see more, just go to their blog: www.expvis.blogspot.com !

Beijos!

Conto budhista

E o mestre respondeu:

Morro de Sao Paulo

After the heat of the carnaval, we went to Morro de Sao Paulo, an island about two hours south of Salvador. It is a bit like Ilha do Mel, quiet, no cars allowed, beaches, sufers and reggae.

We were nine, gathered by CouchSurfing Julio and the gang composed of Belgian-German-French surfers.
We stayed at Julio's grandmothers place, a 93 year old lady, just a door away from the beach! Had a great time, partying and playing with the clay there...

After saying goodbye to or new but dear friends,
one more night in Salvador, first planning to go see a ceremony of Candomble, but time passing by, eating, getting a piercing etc, (video)
eventually we just went to the beach at the Farol de Itapua ;-)

After a 14h flight back (!!!), now back in Porto Alegre, and ready to get started with my project and the auditions!!

- Principais bandas: Chiclete com Banana, Banda Ara Ketu, Ricardo Chaves, Netinho, Ivete Sangalo, Banda Beijo, Dr. Cevada, A Zorra e Jammil. - Principais rotas: Barra/Ondina or Avenida Principal.
- Dias: Quinta-, Sexta-feira ou Sábado. - ou tradicionalmente - Segunda-, Terça- e Quarta-feira.
- Hora de partida: A combinar;
- Price do Abadá.

a>
Back in Salvador, city of Carnaval, Capoeira and Candomble!!!

The one where I go back to Brazil, go out dancing with HIV and start volunteer work in Porto Alegre till Mid May

Hey everybody,

Yep, some news from me, Belgian Bruno, so long overdue that my New Year wishes have turned into Happy Saint Valentine, well, just consider it as all my love going out to you! (or, maybe I should just say I'm on Chinese calender, so I'm even a bit early, but hey, and who are you to contradict 1,3B people)

So, what happened to me: well, after finishing my contract in Haiti in May 2006, my trip in the Caribbean and Brazil, I flew back to Belgium in July '06, spent six months settling, seeing friends all over Europe, a month in Lisboa to study Portuguese, skiing and just generally touching down and enjoying myself.
Three weeks ago I flew back to Brazil, and traveled from Rio down to Porto Alegre where I am now. Next week I am spending carnival in Salvador de Bahia (Brazil) and then will be volunteering in Porto Alegre March and April 07 before heading over to Buenos Aires and Santiago and going back home mi May 07, looking for my "real" job.

Now, since this is a very long (to compensate the overdue factor) email, let me just tell you what to expect so you can skip to whatever interests you more? First of all,

(English) a portrait of how this raped woman could possibly be spreading HIV- the cliff hanger to keep you reading,

(francais) details about my volunteering position here in Porto Alegre - pour les motives,

(Dutch) after the sex, how love came about in my life, Thomas,

and finally some information about South Brasil (Spanish) and Porto Alegre (Portuguese).

Portrait:
Miss D, lovely lady from New Zeeland. She's about 40, mother of two and a failed marriage, set loose upon South America in order to have some fun and find herself... in a lot of tight spots. She's what some would call an alternative free spirit, and what others would call a bit of a nut who will burn in hell. I met her in dorm in my hostel in Rio when I just arrived. On a night out, she tells the story about how she was raped in this border town between Paraguay and Brazil, after she had been drinking too much and three guys put something in her drink (pretty famous here, it is called "Good Night Cinderella", and the scare of young girls and gay clubs). Afterwards, she has only some vague recollections, of sex in some dark, dirty room with several guys, of running down a corridor, before waking up in some apartment of an elderly woman that found her, without any money or much clothes on laying in front of her door at 5am. Pretty shocking story huh? But wait, it gets worse. Now, after a moment of silence, I asked what happened then, did she go to the cops, what did the doctor say? Turns out she simply left town in a hurry, and never went to get checked or tested or anything! Apparently, she didn't know there was a cure that you can take after having been at risk, avoiding getting pregnant or even developing AIDS... Too late now, but I insisted that she would at least get tested, to know. I even offer to accompany her, and get tested as well (though didn't really have to since my last test dates from December). But when she finds out she has to show some ID, she doesn't want to anymore, scared that somehow her health plan is going to find out (yeah, like there must be intensive Brazilian-New Zeeland info swapping around this?!). So, I let it be, not knowing what else to do...
But, we go out, for drinks, concerts, whatever, and each time she gets drunk and picks up some random guy (but often nice ones) and disappears with them. And every time she doesn't use protection... And I sigh and make comments, and she just shrugs her shoulders, and says that it's their choice, and I can't help but wonder if and how many lives could be destroyed like that... Like, I know this kind of things happens all over the world all the time, but seeing it happen before your very eyes... The drop too much is when she even has some random sex with a Colombian guy from our dorm. And I don't know how to react. I mean, she's a nice person, a blast to hang out with, also insecure and looking for herself, and has been through a great deal, but how can you be as irresponsible and inconsiderate?? She knows what she's doing, she's aware of the risks at lot more then her partners... So, eventually, I really just pestered her into doing the test (hell, in reality, I nearly drugged her and dragged her over there, which is sort of ironic if you think about how she got in that situation in the first place). She was so scared of getting bad news that she asked me that I would marry her if it came back positive, which I jokingly accepted.

Well, we're still waiting for the results, so if soon you'll be getting a marriage invitation for a March ceremony in India, you know what happened ;-) But please guys and girls, be careful and responsible, no, even if it takes to be brave sometimes…

Maar eerst, volgende week het carnaval in Salvador de Bahia (mid Brazilie), a life time experience!

(English) a portrait of how this raped woman could possibly be spreading HIV- the cliff hanger to keep you reading,

Saludos a tod@s,

Do Curitiba: best CouchSurfing Experience Ever!

Have spent a week now in Curitiba, which is 8h to the south of Sao Paulo, one of the rare capitals not to be on the coast of Brasil. It is the most European of all Brasilian cities (which shows in the fact that it is raining most of the time ;-).

I am staying with a host family from Couch Surfing.com and they have been great: from basic needs like house, food and washing the clothes (and internet!), to treats and pleasure like visiting waterfalls, spending the weekend at their countryhouse, just amazing! It is so nice to get the family feeling after having spent a couple of weeks by myself and hanging out with other random people.

We're just shadows of our former selves...

First time in my life I touched and held a kolibri (humming bird?)... It was still tiny, and learning how to fly. Dried it because of the rain before it flew off again...

Beautiful sunset....

So, now for further plans: am leaving out THE tourist attraction of South America, Foz da Iguaco, the Niagara falls of the south, cause, well, it's raining, bus ride pretty expensive and I would prefer doing it with some special company...
So, off to the south soon in a short time: Florianopolis - Porto Alegre (where I want to check out this NGO where I could volunteer startting March) and then through Urugay to Buenes Aires (Argentina) and a quick stop in Santiago (Chili) before flying to Salvador de Bahia (back in the center of Brasil) to spend Carnaval there in the best of companies...
